Adult Anatomy

A small lobe at the posterior base of the wing (Ferris, 1950; Bryant, 1975). It has extremely long marginal hairs (Bryant, 1975).

Ferris (1950) notes that 'alula' may refer to either a proximal lobe of the posterior wing (='alar lobe') or the membranous area between this lobe and the body, which is referred to as 'axillary cord' in Bryant (1975).
