Relatively small muscle that inserts directly on a sclerite of the wing hinge to allow for the fine control of wing positioning for behaviors such as flight, grooming or courtship (Dickinson and Tu, 1997). There are thirteen of these muscles on each side (Dickinson and Tu, 1997). It is derived from a direct flight muscle precursor cell of the wing disc (Kozopas and Nusse, 2002).
