Fruitless-expressing descending neuron belonging to the DNp group, having a large cell body posterior to the posterior lateral protocerebrum (Kimura et al., 2008; Matsuo et al., 2016; Namiki et al., 2018). In the brain, its postsynapses are found in the ipsilateral antennal mechanosensory and motor center zones A and B, wedge and the LC4 glomerulus of the posterior ventrolateral protocerebrum (Matsuo et al., 2016). It has presynapses in the gnathal ganglion and saddle (Matsuo et al., 2016). It does not cross the midline and descends on the ipsilateral side of the cervical connective (Namiki et al., 2018). In the VNC it follows the ventral medial tract of the ventral cervical fascicle and innervates the intermediate and lower tectulum, and the T2 leg neuropil (Namiki et al., 2018). It receives looming stimulus input from anterior LC4 neurons and its activity results in a backwards leaning posture and backwards takeoff (Dombrovski et al., 2023). There is one of these cells per hemisphere (Matsuo et al., 2016; Namiki et al., 2018) and it is cholinergic (Cheong et al., 2024).

Namiki et al. (2018), identify this as being morphologically similar to the lateral giant descending neuron, described by Milde and Strausfeld (1990) (FBrf0239829).
