A type of somatic stem cell with a thin, elongate morphology. 4-6 of these cells are present in each germarium where they surround and extensively contact adjacent female germline stem cells.
Obsoleted, as Kirilly et al. (2011) - FBrf0216598, showed that escort cells replenish themselves, rather than being replenished by stem cells. The 'stem' cells identified by Decotto and Spradling (2005) are therefore escort cells.
