Hemocyte of the embryo and larva that differentiates from plasmatocytes, flattening and extending long cytoplasmic extensions.

Obsoleted as there is no support in modern literature for the idea that podocytes are a distinct cell type from plasmatocytes. Lanot et al. (2001), cited in our definition, only refer to them as "so-called podocytes" and actually support the idea that they are merely plasmatocytes.
